The killing

Mr Atkinson died after being Tasered and kicked by Pc Benjamin Monk outside his father’s home in Telford on August 15, 2016.

Mr Atkinson’s family said: “Dalian Atkinson is much missed by all his family and friends and the footballing communities of the clubs he played for in his long and successful career as a professional footballer, especially Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday

Pc Benjamin Monk, of West Mercia Police, has denied both allegations.

The 42-year-old was charged in 2019 with murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter after an inquiry into Mr Atkinson’s death in 2016 in Telford, Shropshire. 

Birmingham Crown Court previously heard that he Tasered Mr Atkinson for six times longer than a standard deployment of the weapon and then kicked him in the forehead so hard it left an imprint of the pattern of his boot laces on the ex-player’s head.

Co defendant

The constable’s colleague, Pc Mary Ellen Bettley-Smith, 31, is also facing trial accused of assault.
