Street Lockdown
Armed police have been called to a bank branch in Burnley town centre after a man produced a knife and threatened staff.
Officers were called shortly after 11am this morning (July 8) to reports of a public order incident at Barclays Bank on St James’ Street.
The offender is understood to have produced a knife after being asked to leave the bank and while staff and customers were inside.
He then made demands for money and member of staff was ‘threatened’.
A cordon was put in place on the street as emergency services responded.
Police said no one was injured and no cash was handed over.
A 34-year-old man from Burnley has been arrested on on suspicion of robbery and remains in custody.
Locals were heard saying “ he must have bet against England”
Then it quickly dawned on them and they realised they were witnessing a armed robbery at a Barclays Bank in Burnley.
Footage shows a heavy police presence and also ambulances were on standby.
Armed police had tasers drawn and were aiming them in
to the doorway of the bank.
They shouted orders inside and eventually a male with a rucksack exited and was out on the ground.
Witnesses were heard saying “that’s the guy”
Some people claimed the man was tasered but there was little evidence to suggest he was at the moment.
