Scotland’s biggest drug lab raided and man charged

Police in Scotland seized thousands of etizolam tablets at an industrial unit on Springfield Road, in Lanarkshire’s Salsburgh, on Friday October 1.

A man has been charged after police swooped on ‘Scotland’s biggest street valium factory’.

The 48-year-old was charged in connection with the recovery of thousands of Etizolam pills, known as street valium.

Etizolam is described as a benzodiazepine-like substance similar to Valium, but is 10 times more toxic.

Officers acting under warrant discovered the ‘sophisticated site’ at an industrial unit on Springfield Road, in Lanarkshire’s Salsburgh, on Friday October 1. 

They also seized drug making equipment including pill presses, necessary to produce the so-called ‘blue plague’ tablets on a commercial scale.

A quantity of cocaine with an estimated street value of approx. £40,000 and £112,000 in cash were also seized as part of the operation.

The man is due to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on January 25, 2022.

At the time, officers dubbed the discovery the “most significant recovery of its kind in Scotland.”

Detective Inspector Laura Sands, from the Serious and Organised Crime Department at Lanarkshire Division, said: “This was a significant recovery by officers which has stopped large amounts of illicit drugs reaching the most vulnerable people in our communities.

“The machine seized was capable of producing millions of Etizolam tablets every day.

“This targeted operation should send a very clear message this this type of illegal and harmful activity won’t be tolerated.
