Birmingham police have recovered a gun from a man bag, which may be linked to one of the recent shootings in Birmingham, and arrested two teenage boys after acting on information.

The gun is being forensically examined by the Complex Investigation Team are monitoring the case. The action comes after the rise in youth violence in Birmingham in recent weeks.

Officers have taken several dangerous weapons off the streets after chasing down and arresting the two teenage boys in Ladywood yesterday (17 July).

The pair were spotted by the officers in a group who ran on seeing police on Middleway View around 9.30pm last night. Officers chased the pair and managed to stop them on King Edwards Road. They noticed one of them throw something onto the ground, which later turned out to be a zombie knife.

Police also retrieved a gun from inside a man bag which had been thrown into a garden thanks to a call from a member of the public.

They arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of possessing a firearm and Class A drugs, and also arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of possessing a firearm and an offensive weapon. Both remain in custody for questioning.

The recent increase in violence in Birmingham has tragically seen the loss of two lives. As well as increased patrols, we invoked Section 60 powers in the city over the weekend, giving us additional stop and search authorities.

Police are also acting on intelligence gathered from the public and other sources, to stop further harm coming to our streets.
