Moss side carnival party murder victim identified

Over this weekend, the sun-soaked streets of Moss Side were filled with happiness and celebration.

The return of Manchester’s Caribbean Carnival after two years saw local residents and the wider community flock to Alexandra Park and the surrounding streets to enjoy the food stalls, parades and live music. Pictures showed scenes of bright colour as visitors soaked up the party atmosphere.

Following the murder on Claremont Road in Moss Side in the early hours of Monday 15 August 2022 of a 20-year-old man, police have now formally identified the victim as Javell Morgan, of West Yorkshire (pictured).

GMP’s Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Neil Higginson, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Javell Morgan, as they try to process the devastating death of their loved one. They have requested privacy at this time.

“Now a Home Office post-mortem has been performed, we can confirm that Javell sadly died as a result of stab injuries, not by a shooting, as was originally thought.

“As the investigation progresses and all lines of enquiry explored, we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have any information to assist our ongoing investigation.

The scene – off Princess Road and just yards away from the carnival’s main hub – is now flooded with police and forensic officers. A huge cordon has been put in place on Princess Road and Claremont Road, as well as on Roseberry Street and Cowesby Street.

Police at the scene said the cordon will be in place until at least Tuesday. Patrols will be stepped up in the area as investigations are carried out.

Following the murder of a 20-year-old man on Claremont Road in Moss Side in the early hours of Monday 15th August 2022, and the subsequent serious assaults that occurred nearby, investigations have determined that these incidents are unrelated.

Detective Superintendent David Meeney said: “Of the four assaults that were reported whereby males have received stab injuries, it has now been established that these are three unrelated incidents.

“Two incidents took place outside of the Moss Side area and are subsequently being investigated by our colleagues on other districts and one incident took place on Roseberry Street, Moss Side. Fortunately, all those who suffered injuries in relation to these incidents have been released from hospital.

“Four suspects have been arrested linked to these assaults and have been bailed whilst investigations are ongoing. We will continue to have an increased presence in Moss Side as we follow all lines of enquiry regarding these incidents.”

At around 00:15am on Monday 15 August 2022, police were called to a serious incident on Claremont Road to reports of a shooting.

The 20-year-old man was found with serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.

A scene is in place at Princess Parkway and Claremont Road so the local public and commuters are advised to avoid the area where possible. “Officers were immediately present at Claremont Road at around 00.15am this morning to reports of a firearm being discharged in the area. Upon arrival, the scene indicated that the victim had sustained multiple wounds and the priority at that time was to get him to safety. The nature of his injuries is yet to be confirmed.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the Claremont Road area in the early hours of this morning, who may have seen something that could help us in tracking down the perpetrator(s). We know there had to be witnesses to this offence, as people made their way home from Moss Side Carnival.

“The investigation is in its early stages, but we are committed to identifying the person or persons who committed this horrendous act of violence and bring them to justice. We have increased patrols in the immediate area to keep the community safe and we currently have a scene in place around Claremont Road in Moss Side whilst we examine the scene.”
