Man charged with Ashton Under Lyne murder of Elizabeth Mccann

Shortly before 9.15am this morning (25 August) we received a call reporting the death of a woman in a flat on Manchester Road in the Ashton-under-Lyne area.

A 51-year-old man arrived at a local police station a short time later and was arrested on suspicion of murder. The family of a woman who was murdered in Ashton-under-Lyne have paid tribute to Elizabeth McCann.

Lizzy McCann, 26 years, sadly died at a property on Manchester Road in the Ashton Under Lyne area on Thursday 25 August 2022. Simon Goold, 51, of Manchester Road, Ashton has been charged with murder, rape and assault by penetration.

He appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court yesterday (Saturday 27 August 2022). He is remanded in custody pending his next appearance at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday 30 August 2022.

Paying tribute to Elizabeth, her family said: “Elizabeth was a very happy and bubbly young lady, who loved to help everyone.

“She loved to go on walks to places like Hartshead Pike, Dovestones and along the canals. Her favourite place to go was Blackpool, especially at Halloween, to see all the decorations and the costumes people were wearing.

“Elizabeth had the biggest heart anyone could ask for, and the warmest smile. She was taken from us too soon, the world hadn’t gotten to know the love Elizabeth gave. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.”

Elizabeth’s family have asked for privacy whilst they grieve her loss.

Detective Chief Inspector Liam Boden, of our Major Incident Team, said: “This is truly shocking news for this young woman’s loved ones to receive today, and we are committed to doing all we can to support her family and to get them the answers they deserve.

“We have one man in custody after he came in to Ashton police station very shortly after the incident was reported to us; he is now being questioned on suspicion of her murder.

“While this appears to have been a contained incident where the suspect was known to the victim, we want to ensure all possible lines of enquiry are explored and therefore anyone with information should get in touch.”
