Derby man who fled to Tenerife after killing Corey Duffy in knife attack is jailed

A man who fled the country for Tenerife after fatally stabbing a man in Derby has been jailed for more than nine years.

Brandon Froggatt (21) of Derby, stabbed Corey Duffy four times following a dispute between the men on Sunday 11 June 2023.

Officers received a 999 call reporting that a man had been stabbed on Cooper Street in the city just after 3.45pm that afternoon.

Just minutes after the initial report, a second 999 call was received from Burdett Lodge probation hostel on Bass Street to a man who had collapsed with stab wounds in the foyer.

Mr Duffy, who was 30 years old, had been stabbed with a knife three times to his chest and once to his thigh.

He suffered serious injuries, and despite attempts to save him, including emergency surgery, he died at the hostel.

A trail of blood and CCTV enquiries led officers to the scene of the stabbing, Mr Duffy staggered back to the hostel for help while Froggatt fled on an e-bike.

Froggatt, who was 20-years-old at the time, then left the country and was arrested on his return by police at East Midlands Airport in the early hours of Wednesday 21 June.

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter during a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday 12 March 2024.

He was sentenced to nine years and two months imprisonment following a hearing today (Friday 15 March) at Derby Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Maria Pleace, Senior Investigating Officer of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Mr Duffy, and I hope that today’s outcome will help them to start to rebuild their lives.

“The pair were known to each other and earlier that Sunday afternoon they had got into a violent fight involving weapons on a quiet residential street, and what is clear is that there really no winners.

“Corey suffered very serious injuries and sadly paid for this altercation with his life, and now it is only right that Froggatt faces the consequences of his actions.”

Det. Insp. Pleace added: “We will continue to ensure we pursue offenders, and target drug related crime to ensure those who commit crimes are brought to justice.”
